Baba Marta

On the last day of March, the sky mirrors our moods,
a collective humph, as we loll and look forward to
weeks, months, years of this shit. Suddenly,
beyond the panes of glass we see it.

Snow.

The first snow of the year after a fitful, dreamless winter,
bursts forth and falls fatter than any we’ve seen,
as we — neighbors in Berlin — creep towards windows,
and onto quiet Balconies. We reach out to feel ice
melt against skin, and smile at each other
across streets and phone screens.

Her sleeping in the armchair,
me crying on the couch.
One foot in front of the other,
the only way we know how.
We’ve done it before.
We’ll manage again,
to get through the day
as best as we can.

I think of the story from the east:
Baba Marta shakes out her mattress
for spring-cleaning. The feathers falling
are the last snow before spring.
This thick white snow hangs
above us, moonsome,
night’s shepherdess guides
no matter where
we look up from.

For one blessed hour,
snow falls over
barren branches,
forgotten cobblestones,
pillowing the paths,
untouched:

It anoints us
as we hold out our hands,
dream for a moment
we are together again.

Her sleeping in the armchair,
me crying on the couch.
One foot in front of the other,
the only way we know how.
We’ve done it before.
We’ll manage again,
to get through the day
as best as we can.
