The punishing Bica hill, in historic Lisbon, Portugal, has always been brimming with local personalities, artists, oddball characters, and wandering drunks. In 2020, Bica was the place of a noteworthy musical and artistic encounter. On one side, O Gajo (literally, “The Dude”), a pillar of the Lisbon scene who embraced and modernized the “viola campaniça”, the traditional Portuguese guitar of the Alentejo region. On the other, French-American producer and guitarist Thomas Attar Bellier, whose work with Arab rock band Al-Qasar recently turned heads in the Middle East and Europe.

« From Bica To The Stars » is a love letter to a place and a time in a cherished neighborhood, an emotionally charged soundtrack to lives infused with tradition but looking towards modernity. The work of this acoustic “power duo”, reminiscent of Palestine’s Le Trio Joubran as much as of Mexican powerhouse Rodrigo y Gabriela, is reinforced by the subtle percussion work of French multi-instrumentalist Nicolas Derolin. Like a wild horse racing through the Alentejo plains, « From Bica To The Stars » takes us from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, unifying influences and melodies from the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa, and the Middle East. O Gajo and Thomas Attar Bellier make the case for a fresh new take on folk music, one that comes from the heart and deeply embedded in tradition, while at the same time encompassing the reality of our modern multilayered and multicultural lifestyles.
